Horst grew up with dogs as his father had German Shepherds and, later on, Miniature Schnauzers, black. He bought his first dog, a Great Dane, when he was 16 years old. His first litter was in this breed. He went on to breed Basset Hounds, West Highland White Terriers, and Standard Wire-haired Dachshunds many of which are are Hunting Champions, which he trained himself. Horst became an All Breeds judge in 1986. He has judged in Australia, Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Belarus, Chile, China, Croatia, South Africa, Panama, New Zealand, India, Latvia, Lithuania, Malaysia, Taiwan, Korea, the USA, Canada, Mexico, France, Spain, Peru, Portugal, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Luxemburg, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Ireland, England, Scotland, Italy and Switzerland. Horst has been the President of the FCI Judges Commission since February 1998. His favourite sport is hunting, and he currently has a Parson Russell Terrier.
