Michael and his wife Patricia (see below) have been breeding Labrador Retrievers under the Ebonylane prefix since 1974. Their kennel name became permanently registered with the Canadian Kennel Club in 1979. Dogs bearing the Ebonylane prefix can be found in virtually every corner of the world.
They are very proud to have been named "Pedigree Pal Breeders of the Year" in 1991. Their Motto has always been to breed dogs with type, temperament and trainability. To this end they have produced over 100 champions, many of which are in hunting homes and top ranking in obedience trial competition. There are many Ebonylane seeing-eye dogs, dogs that are used in drug detection, as well as search and rescue. First and foremost they would like to believe that all our Ebonylane dogs are valued family companions.
In 1984 their breeding ranked Top in Breed competition in both Canada and the United States - Am. Can. Ch. Ebonylane's Buccaneer Gold in Canada and Am. Can. Ch. Ebonylane's Yellow Poplar in the USA. The dogs were both out of Am. Can. Ch. Ebonylane's Cotton Candy. Their sires were litter brothers - Am. Can. Ch Ebonylane's Aslan (top champion producing sire of all time) and multiple Best in Specialty winner Am. Can. Ch. Ebonylane's Midnite Bandit.
They have been members of the Canadian Kennel Club since 1974 and have recently been honoured with Life Membership. Mike is a member of the Canadian Kennel Club Event Officiating Committee. They are founding members of the Labrador Retriever Club of Canada and the Atlantic Labrador Retriever Club, and both are Life Members of the Labrador Owners Club, Honorary Life Time Members of the Chateauguay Valley Kennel Club and the Hochelaga Kennel Club as well as active members of the Halifax Kennel Club, The Canadian Dog Judges Association and the American Dog Show Judges Association. Both are approved to judge at Championship shows by the Canadian Kennel in 1994 and have judged in Canada, the United States, Holland and Australia.
In their other lives, Pat is a retired Paramedic. Originally starting as an obedience trial exhibitor, and interested in field work for gundogs, Peter has had English and Irish Setters, Curly Coated Retrievers, the first G.S.P. bitch ever born in Australia, and extensive breeding and showing of Pointers, breeding BIS winners and exporting to the famous Arista kennel of N.Z. Dobermann's were bred & imported from U.K., USA, Germany and Holland, and exported back to Europe, giving up the breed when the docking fiasco took its toll. Great Danes was another breed which they kept and won BIS with. They won BIS at the original Schnauzer Club of Vic. with Mini Ch. Rathmines Bruno. As a breeder and exhibitor/judge of Hackney Ponies, they naturally bred Miniature Pinschers. In the Hound Group he has had only one Fox Hound. In Whippets they had the BIS winner of the Launceston Royal, plus many other BIS awards. In working dogs he has had German Shepherds, and a Bouvier de Flanders (Imp USA). Currently showing a Collie Rough. Over the last 47 years he has developed a respected Terrier kennel in Fox Terriers (Smooth and Wire), Kerry Blues, and Irish. Has bred Lakeland (BIS Brisbane Royal), Welsh, Sealyham, Scottish and Airedale have all been taken to major awards under specialists. Peter's chief reason for having owned many different breeds is that he is a great believer in hands on experience. This quest has rewarded him by many appointments around the world. He was the first Australian judge to judge Smooths in the 130 year history of the mother Club, in England.
